Spartacus - Blood and Sand
« on: March 21, 2010, 12:30:10 AM »
Gladiator porn? Blatant "300" rip-off? "Deadwood" with sandals, swords and shields?

I just finished watching episodes 1-8. I'm still not sure if I like it or not. I do know that all of the "Xena" fan boys must've made an emergency run for hand-lotion and kleenex...

Don't bother watching this if gratuitous violence, sex, language and stuff like that upsets you...

I have actually wanted to watch it... I watched a little trailer about it roughly half a year ago... though I like most things about gladiators and such

Well, it has a "Rome" style plot line and enough "300/Bullet time" disembowelments and beheadings to keep most people's interest.... and more boobs than a congressional hearing.... so you might want to snag a copy and see for yourself  8-). It goes without saying that this is not family fare - depending on the family involved, of course  :D.

Yes ... Gladiator Porn. A good thing. And from what i see on the Starz forums, the ladies seem to like it too, they all seem to have their favorite flavor of gladiators. "I'm a Crixaholic!" lol...really!?!

I wasn't sure in the first two episodes, for there are moments of cheese, but now i am wholly committed to this series.

The acting is darn good, the violence is cartoonish but addictive, the sex ranges from tender to expliotive, and the drama is "edge of my seat" kind of material. In addition, it is reasonably historically accurate and includes modern research not just into Spartacus the historical figure, but also the daily lives of these gladiators/gigolos. And i do love any series that shows what "civilized" people were like before Judeo/Christian ethics wiped out the old ways of doing business.

In vain, i have been trying to get others to watch it, but if they don't, that is their loss. If you don't dig it by episode 4 (the Pits!) or episode 5 (Theocoles!) then maybe this show is not for you. Thank god something finally came along to replace my Rome (HBO) fix.

Also, never heard the word cock used so much outside of porn and chickens.

5 more days till episode 9!

Good summary, after the 1st two episodes I was thinking it was a complete mash-up of about six different themes - a real WTF? feeling. I watched all of them over a period of 3 days and I'm still deciding if it is brilliant or just entertaining  :?. I agree though, if you aren't interested after the 4th episode (soft core porn and hard core violence aside) then it probably isn't the series for ya. The choreographed fight scenes done to a heavy metal beat does remind me of the Blade Master clips that FSS put together long ago... that in itself is enough to check out some of the series...

Can't get here soon enough. I need something to get that ending scene from Episode 8 out of my mind's eye  .

You don't cross your Masters, your champion or your Ludus. Crucifixion is a bitch.

Don't they all end with horrifying imagery though? Thats why I love it!

Actually the crucifixion was not too bad, it was... the other. No spoilers for them that haven't seen it now....

End, begin and filled up in-between. Just in case you missed something from a previous episode...

I was also on the fence about this series for the first two episodes but by the time I finished the third episode I was hooked and now I can't wait for the newest episode to come on.

On a side note: anyone wanting to get into this series should not judge the series by the premiere episode. When I first watched it I thought, holy crap this is cheesey the fight scenes are blatant and poorly executed 300 ripoffs, and the storyline is cliche as they come. I decided to give the series a chance to redeem itself and I have been pleasently suprised.

couldn't agree more with this, and re-watching that first episode now will make it even more glaring. But thankfully I think the shows artistic direction has found a great balance of drama and effect now, I haven't been cheesed out in quite some time. More psyched now than ever.

Season finale tommorrow night. I tap my foot nervously in anticipation.

Season two is in the works but delayed due to the main stars health problems.

+++Spoiler+++

No one is reading this thread anyway, :) but that sucked how they took Varo out. I knew he was gonna get killed off, but the manner of his death was so cheap and tragic that it was freakin brilliant. Life is cheap.
