Skyrim - opinions?
« on: November 18, 2011, 03:28:28 PM »
Anyone playing this yet (on PC of course)? If so, please post your beefs and bouquets here for all to view...

I have a couple of big issues with the game;
1. The user interface is cumbersome for me to use
and a lot of pc users feel the same way according
to what I see on the Bethesda forums.
2. The texture flickering is horrible for me and a big
distraction.

I like the game itself very much, there's always a lot
to do in this game and it'll be a long time before I get
tired of the game.

and i hate bethesda for that. almost equally as i like them. the UI's are always horrible...
but the game itself makes up for that, though. i would just wish they'd offer high res texture packs for pc users.
and for the UI... maybe we get lucky and get a good mod.
anyways, good game. a refined oblivion. with dragons and snow.

The game is amazing, despite the UI issues. It is well worth the money for the amount of enjoyment that I've gotten out of it and I plan on getting plenty more.

That being said, I have encountered a bug that prevents quest progression on the main storyline. I don't want to reveal any spoilers, but it is quite annoying. It doesn't stop you from playing the game but damnit I want to take the main quest to completion and THEN go exploring every dungeon out there. I am hopeful that the patch scheduled for the week after Thanksgiving will fix this problem. Until then it looks like PoE for me.

there are a few game breaking bugs, as with every bethesda game...
just completed a quest and then realized that i lost all my quest items during that quest...

did anyone notice the goddamn fix... "patch" that forces you to start up and log in through steam to play skyrim?

wtf bethesda, wtf...
what a sad world we live in.

Skyrim has some charm and potential but just like Oblivion it won't be a good game before modders have had their time with it. It's pretty and quite big and its character advancement system has some promise but ultimately it's boring and some of its mechanics are just awful (like combat).

I bought it one day after the release and I've only clocked 17 hours on it. Dark Souls has been out for two months now and it still feels far more fun to play than Skyrim ever felt. I guess I'll return to Skyrim when modding tools have come out and first overhauls are released.

well, i do like the game.  I use some short cuts for Inventory, map, quick magic, and journal.  I am enjoying the environments, quests, but I am mainly sticking to exploring and not going to far in the main quest.
As far as the UI, just wait for Creation Kit to be released and the modders will put together some nice UIs for us.

I don't think that you'll be disappointed. Despite some flaws and bugs the game is actually one of the best games I have ever played. Its also a game that you won't feel like 60 bucks was wasted on. IMHO.

Don't do it, it ain't worth 60 bucks and as huk pointed out, you have to have Steam in order to play now.

I'm quite happy with the game even though there are some bugs. You have to stop and think about what a massive scale this game is on. If it were to release bug free it would have been a miracle. Also, as far as content/gameplay for your money goes you're going to get more than your money's worth out of it.

Of course if you don't like open world/ open exploration games that give you the freedom to go out and do things in whatever order or way you want then this game would NOT be worth your money.

In my opinion the exploration in the game is watered down by few things:

1) Terrible loot; all the best gear in the game is created by the character so there's no excitement in finding stuff

2) Boring dungeons; every single dungeon in the game seems to be a single direct route with nothing to explore - room, cave, room, cave, room, cave...

3) Auto-leveling monsters; unless you use alchemy and enchantment to turn yourself into a god gaining levels has only a minor effect. Also where ever you go the world is ready for you, all the dungeons are filled with "proper" enemies for you to fight so you know what's in there even before you enter.

I would love to have a good open world & exploration RPG but sadly Skyrim doesn't do it for me. I just hope that I could learn and actually skip the next TES  ::)

Well, then to that, I say; To each his own. Although, I must admit that the loot is pretty weak. Also, even though the dungeons/caves/whatever-else are linear I like to find the ones that have side quests attached to them. For me the gameplay is decent and the story is awesome. Different strokes for different folks though.
