DMC5 more airborne than ever
« on: January 31, 2012, 06:27:44 PM »
While nowhere near that other game, the story and developments of DMC5 or DmC deserve a bit of a recap.Ninja Theory apparently lives up to the name in terms of silence, having only announced that the game will "take a while" (dates as far as late 2013 have been speculated,as the game is reportedly "~30% done").

Now,apart from this osom trailer released in 2010,there was also this trailer a while back, which I have personally named "See how NOT DMC4 this is,grabbing lightbulbs like freaking Rayman".Alternative titles include "Bayo-what?" and "Alice McDante in Wonderland feat. creepy demons".
I don't know why I'm so hostile with this trailer...

Being a man of second chances (and third and fourth if need be),I recently stumbled across this gameplay trailer which has personally left me with mixed feelings. It looks like DMC,then again it doesn't,on one hand it reeks of influences by here and there but then again DMC4 was not quite the ideal base either so what else could be done, blah blah and the debates go on and on.

Now as regards the actual fighting system,so far so good.Nothing as dark and moody as the OSOM DMC3,nothing nearly as...grounded,but interesting in it's own flashy, airborne,"DMC yet not quite DMC" manner.
At least linking one's performance with the layers added to the music was innovative, aaand I'm a die-hard fan of scythes so I guess I'll still be giving this one a chance.

If anyone else is into that part of the demon-slaying game-o-universe,I'd be more than interested in your thoughts on this muta-eer,development of the franchise.

Sigh...

A few of the problems I have with "D.M.C.":

- As you pointed out, Ninja Theory is taking way too long with this game. I recall Capcom being much faster when they made the Devil May Cry games themselves.

- Why the heck did Ninja Theory chose to work with Unreal when Capcom could have just given them the actual Devil May Cry engine in the first place?

- After a mere four games, Capcom (and Ninja Theory) have elected to abandon the current storyline and go with something that they can't even decide.* Biohazard/Resident Evil is coming onto its 6th game, and Capcom hasn't abandoned its current timeline there!

- Unless the enemy AI is improved in the final product, I'm expecting another DMC2 experience. In fact, the enemies in the trailers are arguably dumber than the ones in DMC2.

- Air combat up the wazoo? The last hack & slashes that I played that were heavily dependent on you using air combat were Shinobi & Nightshade/Kunoichi. Both were... alright attempts at it, I guess. But after a while I got sick of the whole thing because it required you to use air combat to move across miles of terrain with bottomless pits. I'm still sick of that kind of game play... and its been nearly 8 years since I played Nightshade. I'm not going to look forward to that crap if Ninja Theory decides to copy Shinobi/Nightshade.

- Sorry if I am coming off as Shallow, but I will lump myself in with the crowd who don't like "Donte". There were a lot of traits the old Dante exhibited that I found endearing and/or became accustomed. This new one (Donte)... there's something about him I don't like. Maybe its the grungy, "OH MAN I JUST GOT BLOODIED UP IN GEARS OF WAR AFTER CLIMBING THROUGH JERICHO AND THEN CRASHING INTO DARKSIDERS AND RUNNING THROUGH A GRAND THEFT AUTO TO DO SOME METH ALL WHILE HANGING WITH DARTH VADERS' APPRENTICE WHILE TRYING TO BE INFAMOUS" look. I suppose there was something about the old Dante that I found refreshing, versus Donte's look.

* There has been a back and forth in the game news as to what DMC actually is; sometimes they say it is a new beginning to an alternate time line while others say it takes place before DMC3 chronologically. Can't they make up their minds?

I'm just going to sit back and wait on this one. I am pretty torn so I don't know if I will actually play it or not. Time shall tell.

Also, thanks for the posts Bryan and cthulhu :)
